A Baby Quilt and Crocheted Sweater for a Special Little One

Hello, Dear Friends, today I would like to share
two handmade gifts I created for a very special
birthday - my Grandson's 1st birthday <3

Here he is with his very own birthday cake :)

I have saved Ramblin' Man's work shirts
for years, always intending to sew
a special quilt if I ever had a grandson!

Now my wish has come true.....

I found the pattern in this magazine.....

You can still get copies Here.

I made the cover quilt and it was very easy.

I had never made a quilt before!

I spent many happy hours in my sewing room
while thinking of my little grandson.

I simply made some cardboard templates
(from thin cardboard)
and traced them onto the fabric to cut them out.

I kept the different sized stacks together in a tray as I went along.

In between cutting and sewing sessions,
I kept them sweet with some home-made sachets.
(I'll share the tutorial when I share my potpourri recipe)

I love spending time in my sewing room....
(Once upon a time it was my two daughters' bedroom:)

I try to keep things tidy!
Sometimes it's a losing battle.....

Lots of pressing....

The finished quilt top.
(I made it smaller than the one in the magazine)

The quilt designer used land plats
as her inspiration!

I used thin, 100% organic cotton batting
and backed it with shirting fabric in similar hues.

I did simple machine quilting all over, following the outlines
of the patches.

I used blue binding tape to finish it off.

In the evenings, I was busy crocheting a warm, matching sweater.

I used this free pattern: Bouncing Baby Pullover

This is the second sweater I have made using this pattern.
It's super easy........

I used a sporting weight yarn to make it extra warm and cozy.

Every stitch, made with love....

Some country cuteness:)

Ready for a day on the beach or cuddled up by the fire.

I couldn't resist showing you our sweet
grandson with his first cake once more....

We had so much fun sharing his special day!

Cupcakes for the rest of us:)

Thank you for sharing this precious moment with me,
Dear Friends,
and thank you for your sweet visits!

  4. Hey, Karen. Thanks for sharing your grandson's birthday with us. He is adorable and so are his quilt and sweater. When my daddy passed away, I took his cotton shirts and made 7 lap quilts from them that Christmas. One for mama, one each for my 5 siblings and one for me. Needless to say, that was a very emotional Christmas.

  22. Dear Karen, one can truly feel the love that you hold in your heart for your grandson in this post. How wonderful that you took the time to make him the cute baby sweater and the beautiful quilt. That quilt is stunning, sooo... lovely!
For some reason what really touched me is that you saved your husband's work shirts in the anticipation to have a grandson one day, long before he was actually born. I think that is really special and I am so happy for you that your wish came true.
    Warm regards,
    Christina
